Utilising material from a captive waste stream

Second-life pallet: baskets ground to flake and moulded directly, with no extrusion step.

AION · Bread-basket pallet · McDonald's / HAVI

THE PROBLEM

Damaged bread baskets left the supply chain as waste, while the wooden pallets in the same loop wore out and were replaced.

THE SOLUTION

Second-life pallet

Damaged bread baskets are ground to flake and moulded straight into a rackable pallet, with no extrusion step in between. The pallet carries no virgin input, and when one is retired it is recycled into new pallets.

THE VALUE

1 for 2.4

wooden pallets replaced over 48 trips

One moulded pallet outlasts 2.4 wooden ones

Over 48 trips, the loop needs 2.4 wooden pallets for every moulded one. The baskets that used to leave as waste now come back as the pallets.

100%

recycled plastic, no virgin input

10.5 kg

versus about 24 kg for wood

600 kg

racking capacity
