Case study · Skarsvåg Boats and REV Ocean · Recycled marine sheet
Fishing nets, rebuilt as a weldable hull
Recycled marine sheet: krill trawl nets compounded into weldable HDPE at 50% recycled content.
AION · Recycled marine HDPE sheet · Skarsvåg Boats for REV Ocean

THE PROBLEM
Welded HDPE boats are built from virgin sheet. Recycled grades had no track record in a structural, welded hull.
THE SOLUTION
Recycled marine sheet
Krill trawl nets are compounded with virgin HDPE into weldable sheet at 50% recycled content, with a matching welding rod. Skarsvåg Boats built REV Ocean's beach lander from the sheet, the rod and more than 100 machined parts, with the material traceable from net to hull.

THE VALUE
9 tonnes
of fishing-net plastic in place of virgin HDPE
Sheet, welding rod and 100+ machined parts for one boat
Half of the plastic in the boat came from krill trawl nets, and the sheet performs in line with virgin PE-HD. On SIMONA's data sheets it matches virgin on yield stress, stretches slightly further before it yields, is 5% less stiff and absorbs 44% more energy in a notched impact test.
50%
recycled fishing net in every sheet
500%
elongation at break, ISO 527
5×
less CO2 for the recycled share
